Sneaker & Apparel Authenticity

What to check on sneakers and designer clothing - labels, style codes, stitching, construction, materials and packaging - and when professional authentication makes sense.

By Kali.J Design — The Toy Showroom, Upland, CA · Updated

The short answerStart with the labels: the size tag, style code and country of manufacture should make sense for the exact model and agree with the box and any paperwork. Then compare construction, stitching, materials and packaging with a known genuine pair of the same release. For higher-value items, use a professional authentication service.

What to check

Labels and size tags

What it is
The tag inside the tongue or collar (sneakers) or the neck and care labels (clothing).
How to check
Read every line. Printing should be crisp and consistent, with no obvious spelling errors.
Why it matters
Labels identify the exact product and are one of the first places inconsistencies show up.
What to photograph
Every label, in focus.
When to get help
Blurry, misspelled or mismatched labels.

Style / SKU code

What it is
A product code that identifies the model and colorway.
How to check
Look the code up and check it matches the model and colors in front of you. Compare it with the code on the box label.
Why it matters
A code that belongs to a different shoe or color is a strong reason to stop and look closer.
What to photograph
The tag and the box label.
When to get help
Codes that do not match the shoe or each other.

Stitching and construction

What it is
Seam placement, stitch density, panel shapes and symmetry between the left and right shoe.
How to check
Compare side by side with photos of a confirmed genuine pair of the same release.
Why it matters
Construction details are hard to copy exactly.
What to photograph
Both shoes from the side, heel and toe.
When to get help
Uneven stitching, sloppy glue, mismatched shapes.

Materials

What it is
Leather, suede, knit, rubber and hardware.
How to check
Feel and smell. Genuine materials usually match the product description; compare with a known genuine example.
Why it matters
Materials are a common cost-cutting point for copies.
What to photograph
Close-ups of the materials in daylight.
When to get help
Materials that do not match the model description.

Packaging and accessories

What it is
Box, box label, lid, tissue, extra laces, hang tags.
How to check
The box label should describe the same size, model and colorway as the shoes.
Why it matters
Mismatched boxes are common - sometimes innocent, sometimes not.
What to photograph
The box label and all accessories.
When to get help
A box label for a different product.

Product-code consistency

What it is
Whether every identifier - tags, box, receipts - tells the same story.
How to check
Line them up and compare.
Why it matters
Consistency is reassuring; inconsistency is a reason to dig deeper, not automatic proof of a fake.
What to photograph
All identifiers together.
When to get help
Several details that disagree.

When does professional authentication make sense?

When a pair or garment is valuable, heavily counterfeited, or something about it does not add up. Photo-based services are inexpensive compared with the cost of a mistake.

An authentication result is an expert opinion. Keep the certificate and the photos you submitted with the item.
