The short answer

If you have the time and patience to photograph, list, pack and ship every piece yourself, you will usually net the most money — and you will work for it.
The wrong move is almost always the same one: putting a box of collectibles into a general estate sale or a garage sale, where a dealer buys the whole lot for a fraction of what the good pieces are worth individually.
The five options, honestly
1. Sell outright to a specialist buyer (cash today)
You get paid on the spot and you are done. The buyer takes on everything that comes after: photographing, listing, storage, fees, shipping, returns, and the risk that a piece sits for a year.
Best for: clearing space, a deadline, an inherited collection you do not want to manage, or anything you simply want gone. Trade-off: a cash offer is always below what the item eventually sells for. That gap is the buyer's cost and risk, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being straight with you.
2. Consignment (more money, you wait)
The shop photographs, researches, lists and sells your items across eBay, Amazon, Whatnot, auctions and the Upland showroom floor. You keep 60% of the net proceeds, tracked per item in a private portal so you can see exactly what each piece sold for and what was deducted.
Best for: collections with genuinely valuable pieces where the extra weeks are worth real money. Trade-off: you get paid when things sell, not today.
3. Sell them yourself online
The highest ceiling and the most work. Expect roughly 13% in marketplace fees before shipping, plus your time on photos, listings, messages, packing and the occasional return.
Best for: a small number of high-value pieces you can research properly. Trade-off: a 40-piece collection is a part-time job, and vintage toys are exactly the category where buyers ask the most questions.
4. Auction house
Good for the rare, the graded and the genuinely unusual. The market sets the price, which cuts both ways.
Best for: one standout piece, not a mixed box. Trade-off: seller fees, a fixed calendar, and no floor unless the house lets you set a reserve.
5. Estate sale or garage sale
The fastest way to convert a whole house, and the most expensive way to sell collectibles. Toys are the category where dealers make their margin at these sales.
Best for: volume and furniture. Trade-off: pull the collectibles out first and price them separately, or you will hand someone else the profit.
What vintage toys are actually worth
Condition and completeness drive almost everything, and the difference is bigger than most people expect. A sealed or boxed example regularly sells for well over a loose one — the box is a large share of the value, not a detail. Original packaging, inserts, instructions and accessories all count.
The other thing that moves a number is identification. A "vintage action figure" is worth whatever the average action figure is worth, which is close to meaningless. The same figure identified by line, character, year and variant is worth what that piece sells for. If you want a real number, the single most useful thing you can do is photograph pieces individually rather than as a pile.
